Barony of forgotten sea

SCA Branch of Greater Kansas City

🌿 Your First Event

So you’ve been to a few meetings and now you’re ready for your first SCA event — exciting!
An event is a larger gathering that can include tournaments, classes, a feast, and court. It’s where you’ll truly experience the magic of the SCA.
This guide will walk you through what to expect and how to prepare.

🧺 Getting Ready

Before you go, here are a few things to have in order:

đź‘— Garb (Clothing)
At events, you’ll need to wear something that looks roughly medieval — we call this garb.
It doesn’t have to be fancy! A simple tunic and pants or a long dress is perfect.
If you don’t have your own yet, ask your group’s Gold Key officer about loaner garb.

🎒 What to Bring
Depending on the event type, you might want to pack:

  • 🏰 Indoor event: Just your garb and something to drink from.
  • 🌳 Outdoor event: A chair, sunscreen, bug spray, and water.
  • ⛺ Camping event: Camping gear, plus check if you need to bring your own water or cooking supplies.
  • 🍽️ Feast event: Your feast gear — plate, bowl, cup, utensils, and napkin.

A little preparation makes your day more comfortable and relaxed!

🏰 Checking In at “Gate”

When you arrive, your first stop will be Gate — the check-in table.

Here you’ll:

  • đź’° Pay the event fee (many sites take only cash or check).
  • 🖊️ Sign a waiver if needed (especially for activities like archery or equestrian).
  • đź’ł Show your blue card if you’re a paid SCA member (members usually get a $5 discount).

Not a member yet? No problem — you can still attend and enjoy everything!

⚔️ Tournaments

One of the most exciting parts of many events is the tournament fighting.
You can watch or — if you’re ready — take part!

  • 🛡️ To participate, you must first be authorized, meaning you’ve shown you understand safety and rules.
  • 📜 Authorizations usually happen before the tournament — check the schedule.
  • ✍️ To compete, sign up at the List Table. Heralds will call fighters when it’s their turn.

Even if you’re not fighting, it’s fun to cheer on your friends and meet people.
Between bouts, you’ll often see “pick-up fights” — friendly sparring matches where fighters practice or just have fun.

📚 Classes

Learning and sharing knowledge is at the heart of the SCA!
Most events include classes on topics like clothing, calligraphy, swordplay, or medieval cooking.

  • đź•‘ Check the event schedule for class times and descriptions.
  • 🧵 Classes can be lectures or hands-on workshops.
  • đź’µ Some may have a small materials fee (listed in the description).
  • đź“„ You can usually attend and watch even if you skip the materials cost.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions — instructors love to share what they know!

đź‘‘ Court

“Court” in the SCA is a joyful ceremony — not a courtroom!
It’s when the Baron and Baroness (or the King and Queen at Kingdom level) recognize people for their achievements and service.

Here’s what to expect:

  • 📯 A herald will announce the start of court. Everyone stands and bows as the nobles enter.
  • 🪑 If standing is hard for you, it’s fine to stay seated.
  • 🏅 Awards and recognitions are given during court — a highlight for everyone!

💜 Calontir Tradition: If it’s your first event, newcomers are often invited up to receive a small gift of welcome. Don’t worry — everyone will be cheering for you!

🍗 Feast

Some events end with a feast — a shared meal with several courses (called removes).
If you’d like to attend, pay for your feast spot at Gate when you check in.

🍴 Bring your feast gear:
Plate, bowl, utensils, napkin, and cup (ask Gold Key if you need to borrow some).

Other feast tips:

  • 🥖 Don’t fill up too early — there are usually many courses!
  • ⚠️ If you have dietary restrictions, check with the Feast Steward before the event.
  • 🎶 Entertainment like singing or storytelling may happen between courses.
  • 🧽 Afterward, help with cleanup if you can — it’s a great way to make friends!

🎉 Post-Revel

After the event, there’s often a post-revel — a relaxed gathering at someone’s home or campsite.
Expect laughter, storytelling, games, and good company.
It might feel a little intimidating your first time, but post-revels are a wonderful way to get to know people better and feel part of the community.

🌟 Welcome to the Adventure!

Your first SCA event can feel like a lot, but don’t worry — everyone was new once.
Ask questions, try new things, and most importantly, have fun.
The Society is full of people who love sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm, and friendship.

⚜️ You’re officially part of the adventure now — welcome home!
